A's birthday, and anticipating Christmas [15 Dec 2009|10:19pm]

serenasnape
It's [info]ajmnewa's birthday today! He is oooooold. And I'm sitting here humouring him by staying in the room while he watches Rocky IV. Also I threw together a trifle with shamefully ready-made (but Co-op Fairtrade) sponge and custard :)

(He's whinging now because he's read what I've written! Bless. But also wishes to state that he loves me very much. Awww.)

Anyway, apart from A's birthday, it's all very much Christmas preparations, end of term tying up of loose ends, and all that. (Haha how 80s are the sheepskin lined bomber jackets in Rocky?!) I'm looking forward to singing for Alastair's firm's carol service on Thursday, with Alastair playing the organ, and then looking ahead to the weekend and our carol service at church - 6:30pm, do come if you want to sing carols and we'll have people back to the flat afterwards for a small drink :)

I absolutely love Christmas - I love all the excitement, and I love the feeling that this is a time of year specifically set aside to be kind and generous to others. But most of all, of course, because it can be a stressful time as well, I love focusing on the fact that none of it actually matters in the least - what matters is the beauty of God loving us so much that he did not sit on high and far off, but came right down to our level and lived among us, as one of us. I am so thankful for Jesus, the miracle of the Greatest Gift of All.

i dreamed a dream [15 Dec 2009|12:23pm]

I had the best dream early this morning (late this morning? whatever) featurning something called TIME MICE! I don't know how they worked, but they sang songs to guide people through time and wore cute striped scarves and Neko (my cat Neko, the Big Siamese, for anyone new) was their friend (or possibly their leader.)

And then Chris woke me up. It was fortunate he was making coffee. I really wanted to know how the time mice worked. They kind of make me think of [info]brewsternorth for some reason ... <3 and also [info]euclase, of course, because they're her sort of thing.

i am a very lucky [info]phinnia. <3 thank you to [info]causticchick and [info]frankincensy for the gorgeous cards and [info]mirrormargaret for the awesome card + CD and [info]lynnafer for the amazing card + COOKIES OMG. (i would love to get those recipes. especially for the FANTASTIC toffee one on top. they are all fabulous but that one is the clear household favorite.)

I kind of have a confession. I read 'real simple' yesterday and enjoyed it. oh dear.

ETA: i think they had the same accent as [info]brewsternorth, upon reflection. that makes sense.

christmas is coming and the geese are getting fat [11 Dec 2009|03:18pm]

the holiday wishlist, again. if you have one, please link to it. <3

1. mix cds! or a folder online with a downloadable mix - but i really prefer getting a mix CD in the mail. i love getting mail. i don't care if it's late. my address is here or you can PM me for it. <3

ETA: regarding What Music I Like, copied from a comment below:

I like nearly anything. I don't like a lot of any hard rap or loud opera arias or Depressing Country Songs Where Everyone Dies - by which i mean i don't like a lot of that on one CD. <3 but i like some of nearly everything. i want to know what you like. This is the season of sharing. <3 I would be very honored if you would share some of your music with me. <3

2. if you would like to podfic anything i've written, or write me a fic - a sequel or a remix or anything like that, or something else - that would be wonderful and marvelous and i would be childishly excited and you would get a worshipful post with lots of capslocky joy. same goes for art or vids, or really any kind of derivative works. i am kind of biased towards low-angst, please. <3 If you've read what I write, you know the kind of thing i like.

3. for those that can - hand knitted socks! my doctor likes that i wear wool socks. i knit but i am terribly slow at it because my hands are cranky and my feet are large (size 10.5 americanish. Total foot length is 10" from back of heel to tips of toes - yes, really. my feet are big, and they swell, and it is very difficult to find cute socks in sizes that large. and it irks the living hell out of me. i like blues and greens and reds and oranges and pinks and purples and rainbowy colors.

4. If you would like to buy seaners anything at any time, small plastic travel toothbrush cases (the kind you find in the drugstore near the travel soaps and things) will make you his friend. <3 <3 Seaners is a very cheap date. (we are trying to steer him away from small bottles and things because he's pouring out bottles of cough syrup and such to make stimmies out of them.) Stuffed animals and the like are good but try and find something with an interesting texture if you can. Those are usually his favorites.

5. I have an amazon wishlist under my lj name at comcast dot net, if you'd like to.

day 'n' of flare. i think we will call this flare 'winter'. does not help that seattle is experiencing sub-zero temperatures at the moment, so it is (quite literally) freezing outside. it does help that my brain worked out that it could turn on the heat. (i am one of those people that reacts to cold by putting on another sweater/blanket/layer/etc etc etc etc. turning up the heat literally does not occur to me unless there are small children involved, and then only in their immediate vicinity. once again i fail at self care).

supposedly the ridiculous cold will end on saturday night. i hope so. my current pain killers are insufficient. i try not to complain too much, but this is ridiculous and i have to go out at some point today, fuckit, the cats need food and the kid needs soy yogurt as a delivery mechanism for his meds tonight (and amazon fresh has no delivery slots left today. anyone local able to pick me up soy yogurt and cat food tonight? i will pay moneys and gratitude and eventually christmas cookies <3)

the cat is licking my head. and my hair. and it is WEIRD.

Internet, explosion thereof [07 Dec 2009|11:32pm]

It used to be much easier to be a shy person online. Now everybody's online on facebook (and even reading LJ) so I hide on Twitter for the more important stuff.

Street Pastors [04 Dec 2009|12:17pm]

serenasnape
There has been some negative publicity about Street Pastors this week. For a summary of the debate and what, exactly, Street Pastors do and don't do, there is an excellent blog here.

Our church supports Street Pastors, and several of our members have trained or are training as Street Pastors. They are wonderful people, not out to proselytise, but to show love in a practical way, perhaps in a way people least expect, without any agenda except to live and love as we believe Jesus has taught us. It is emphatically NOT "evangelism," ie setting out with the purpose of preaching to all and sundry and asking them to change their lives or beliefs; rather I would say it is an example of Augustine's exhortation to "Preach the Gospel at all times. Where necessary, use words."
